Many flower enthusiasts have observed that the soil in pots gradually becomes compacted over time. In fact, this is not a mysterious phenomenon but rather the result of the combined effects of natural factors and cultivation practices.

The primary cause of this phenomenon is soil compaction caused by irrigation. Soil naturally contains numerous pores, which become filled and compressed when water seeps in. As plants grow and their root systems expand, the soil gradually becomes compacted, leading to a continuous reduction in volume and a visible decrease in apparent soil mass. Potting soil that is watered excessively or left undisturbed for extended periods tends to settle more rapidly.

Secondly, watering and fertilization can also lead to partial soil loss. During watering, the water flow erodes the fine soil at the drainage holes at the bottom of the pot. Over time, this fine soil is carried away by the water and eventually accumulates into a soil layer.

Furthermore, this phenomenon is closely associated with soil compaction. When plants absorb nutrients and continuous watering occurs, the organic matter content in the soil gradually decreases. Consequently, soil particles become more compacted, and their volume shrinks, creating the perception that the soil material appears to diminish.

By regularly loosening the soil and adding a small amount of fresh soil at the right time, we can not only maintain the soil volume and permeability, but also promote the healthy growth of plants.
