When selecting a flower pot, the depth is crucial and should be determined based on the growth habits of the plant's root system. Choosing the right depth ensures proper root respiration and promotes healthy plant growth.

Shallow-rooted plants (such as succulents, petunias, and most herbaceous flowers) are suitable for shallow pots. These plants have underdeveloped root systems and prefer a "firmly rooted" environment. Excessively deep pots can lead to waterlogging and root rot at the bottom of the soil. For mature succulents, a pot depth of 4-8cm is sufficient.

Deep-rooted plants (such as roses, blue snowdrops, wisteria, rosemary, and bulbous plants) require deep pots. These plants have well-developed root systems with strong downward root growth capabilities. If the pot is too shallow, it will restrict growth, causing the plant to become top-heavy and prone to lodging. The recommended depth of the pot should be 1/4 to 1/3 of the plant's height. For example, for a 1.2-meter-tall plant, the pot depth should preferably be over 30 cm.

There are general rules for potting: the diameter and depth of the new pot should be 5-10 cm larger than the original pot, or 5-10 cm wider than the plant's crown width. Only "one size larger" at a time, and never attempt to achieve the desired size in a single step.
